SERVICES
The Sierpe wetland is the largest in Costa Rica, it has an abundant plant and animal life. On the river bank we can find mangroves, lilies and other aquatic plants, which is why it is the ideal habitat for the development and reproduction of many species of fish, shrimp, crabs and others that make up the food chain of this fabulous ecosystem.
Upstream the water is sweeter, we generally find fish such as Machaca, snook, Tarpon and snappers. Fishing here is usually done by casting, so precision is important to present the lure in hot spots.
Downstream we find brackish water, so it is possible to catch Corvina, Grouper, Tarpon, Snapper and Rooster by using surface lures, trolling, casting or jigging techniques can also be used.
Fishing in the river is much better when the tide is low, so the tour lasts no more than 6 hours. But if you want to spend a couple more hours fishing, you can mix downstream fishing with coastal fishing, taking advantage of it if the tide is low in the early hours of the morning or around noon.
Fishing in the River
Caño Island Fishing
About 14 nautical miles from the mouth of the Sierpe River is the Isla del Caño biological reserve. This island has a permanent fishing restriction in its first two kilometers, which makes it possible for different species of fish to reproduce and to maintain a large population of fish for several kilometers around, which will often be our objective in fishing. sports such as Cubera Snapper, Amberjack, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Pampano, Barracudas, Grouper, Wahoo, among others ...
Different fishing techniques can be applied in the waters around the island such as trolling with lures, fishing with live bait when it is possible to find it, casting or jigging in depths ranging from 100 to 200 feet generally.
There are peak months for fishing different species, for yellowfin tuna or wahoo the best months are from June to November; For Mahi Mahi, the best time is from September to November, but there is the possibility of catching any type of fish at any time.
Inshore Fishing
Leaving the mouth of the Sierpe river we will start our fishing day, where we can find species such as rooster fish, cubera snapper, mackerels, needlefish, bluefin trevally, bigeye trevally, barracuda and crevalle jack among others.
For the months of December to April, many schools of sardines come to the beach to spawn, so predators come there to feed and it is the perfect time to cast any lure such as poppers or minnows.
There are large rock formations along the entire coast, which helps to obtain excellent catches throughout the year.
The coast tour lasts approximately 9 hours, so if you do not want to spend the whole day in the ocean, you can mix coastal fishing with river fishing, you just have to tell us to reach the river when the tide is low, combining coastal fishing with river fishing if low tide is at 7am or at noon.
Offshore Fishing
Due to its geographical location, Costa Rica has fishing opportunities that are recognized worldwide as the first level of sport fishing. It has more than 40 world records of sport fishing, which have been established along the Pacific coast of the country, which undoubtedly positions the country as one of the preferred fishing destinations, being Sierpe one of the places with better reputations.
